Honmanji Temple is a head temple (hozan) of the Nichiren school located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto. Its mountain name is Kobusanzan (Koseiryu-zan), and the principal image is the Jikkai Mandala. Founded by the monk Nikko in the Muromachi period, the temple has transmitted the teachings of the Lotus Sutra from this site ever since. Four sub-temples (tatchuu) stand within the precinct, each holding its own history. As a place of prayer grounded in the Nichiren school tradition, the temple has long welcomed worshippers seeking fulfillment of their sincere vows. It sits quietly within the everyday life of Kyoto, keeping the flame of faith alive.
