Myoki-an is a Buddhist temple of the Rinzai Tofuku-ji school, located in Oyamazaki-cho, Otokuni-gun, Kyoto Prefecture. Its mountain name is Hokozan, also known as Myoki Zen-an. Founded during the Meio era of the Muromachi period (1492-1501) by Shungaku Shiho, a dharma heir of Tofuku-ji, the temple is best known for housing the National Treasure tea room Taian. Considered the perfected form of the thatched-hut tea room and the oldest surviving tea room architecture in Japan, Taian draws tea practitioners and scholars from around the world. Visitors experience the profound spirit of Zen and ichigo-ichie in this place of quiet contemplation.
