History

Byakko

The Kannon of Yangutani Temple has been renowned since ancient times for its miraculous power in healing eye diseases. Founded during the reign of Empress Suiko over fourteen hundred years ago, the temple preserves this sacred legacy. According to tradition, washing one's eyes with blessed water that has received Kannon's protection can restore sight and bring light to darkened vision. Pilgrims have long venerated Avalokiteshvara enshrined in this valley of willows as a compassionate deity capable of granting vision to the blind.
