History

Byakko

Honkyo-ji is a Nichiren Buddhist temple located in Omura City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Its mountain name is Banzaizan, and its former head temple was Daihonzan Honkoku-ji of the Rokujō Gate lineage. It is counted among the three main temples of that lineage. Founded in 1569 (Eiroku 12) by Omura Sumitada, the lord who became Japan's first Christian daimyo, the temple was later re-established in 1614 (Keichō 19) by Omura Yoshiaki, who designated it with its current name to honor his father's memory. Under the patronage of the Omura domain, it has long served as a place of prayer and ancestral rites, preserving its Nichiren tradition to the present day.
