History

Byakko

An ancient shrine nestled in the mountains of Kurama, enveloped in mystical atmosphere. According to legend, when fires plagued the imperial court during the Heian period, this shrine transferred sacred fire to the court, becoming famous through the 'Kurama Fire Festival' that followed. Situated along the approach to Kurama Temple, the shrine is filled with a sacred atmosphere where mountain spirits seem to dwell. Since ancient times, it has been revered by the people of the capital as a god of protection from calamity.
