History

Byakko

Hachidai Jinja, located in Ichijoji Matsubara-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, was established in 1294 (Einin 2) as the tutelary shrine of Ichijoji village, enshrining deities transferred from Gion Shrine. It is widely known for its connection to the legendary swordmaster Miyamoto Musashi. During the Keichou era, Musashi visited the shrine before his duel with the Yoshioka clan at the Ichijoji Shitaomatsu. According to tradition, he became aware of his own weakness when he was about to pray for divine assistance, and turned back without paying his respects. An ancient tree from Ichijoji Shitaomatsu is preserved within the shrine. Adjacent to Shisendo, it continues to be revered as a deity of directional protection (hojo).
