History

Byakko

Kotaiji, formally known as Kaiuzan Fusho Kotai Zenji, is a Soto Zen temple in Nagasaki City, founded in 1607 by Nagasaki magistrate Hasegawa Fujihiro, who invited Zen master Taiso Genzetsu from Kenninji in Kyoto. One of the three great temples of Nagasaki, it oversees fourteen branch temples throughout the city and beyond. Through the years of Nagasaki as Japan's sole open port, through the upheavals of the Bakumatsu period, and through recovery from the atomic bombing, the temple has endured as a spiritual landmark of the city.
