History

Byakko

An ancient shikinaisha enshrined in Amino, Kyotango City, formerly a prefectural shrine (fusha). Recorded in the Engishiki, its founding predates the 10th century. The shrine venerates three deities including Mizunoe-Hikoimas-no-miko, Sumiyoshi-no-Okamisama, and Mizunoe-Urashimako-no-kami, said to be the model for the legendary Urashima Taro. It has long been revered as a guardian of fishing. Eight structures including the main hall are registered as national tangible cultural properties, and the subsidiary Koori Shrine is a component of the Japan Heritage silk road corridor.
