History

Byakko

This shrine is a unity of two originally separate shrines — Kamitani Shrine and Tachino Miya Shrine — merged into one sacred compound. Known as 'Tachi no Miya' through the Edo period, it gathered reverence as the local village shrine (gōsha) of the Kuminohama area during the Meiji era. It is the only shrine in Japan enshrining Tanba Michimori no Mikoto as its principal deity, with the deity's personal sword 'Kunimi no Tsurugi' as the sacred object. This sword is considered one of the origins of the place name 'Kuminohama.' The autumn festival remains one of the most celebrated festivals in the Tango region.
