History

Byakko

Ryugenji Temple in Usuki, Oita, was founded in 1600 by the first lord of Usuki Domain, Inaba Sadamichi, with the monk Enyo as founding priest. Legend holds that Enyo, guided by a dream of a raging dragon, brought a calligraphic scroll of the six-character nembutsu by Emperor Go-Yozei to this site and caused the dragon to ascend to heaven. The temple's three-story wooden pagoda, completed between 1848 and 1858, is designated as a tangible cultural property of Oita Prefecture and is one of only two surviving Edo-period wooden three-story pagodas in Kyushu.
