History

Byakko

Enshrined on the island of Iki in Nagasaki Prefecture, this shrine was established in 811 CE as Amenotenagao Shrine. The principal deity is Amenooshihomimi no Mikoto, a divine son of Amaterasu. Listed as a Meishin Taisha in the Engishiki during the Heian period, it is regarded as a successor to the Iki no Kuni Ichinomiya. After falling into disuse during the Mongol invasions, its location was rediscovered by Kokugaku scholar Tachibana Mitsuyoshi in the Edo period, and the shrine buildings were later rebuilt under the order of the Matsuura domain lord.
