History
Torin-in is a sub-temple of Myoshinji, the head temple of the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen, located in Hanazono, Kyoto. The principal image is Kannon Bosatsu. The temple is renowned for its 300-year-old natsu-tsubaki trees, known as shara-soju, earning it the name Temple of the Shara Trees. Each June, a special gathering is held to appreciate the brief blossoms, whose fall evokes the Buddhist teaching of impermanence.
