History

Byakko

Nanzenin is a sub-temple of the head temple Nanzenji in the Sakyo ward of Kyoto, and is regarded as the very birthplace of Nanzenji itself. In 1287 (the 10th year of Koan), Emperor Kameyama established his detached palace on this site, which later became Nanzenji. The principal object of worship is a statue of Emperor Kameyama. The Sogen-chi garden, a pond-strolling garden designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site, preserves the deep stillness of Zen practice. The iconic water aqueduct of the Lake Biwa Canal runs just outside the temple gate, layering centuries of history in one quiet corner of eastern Kyoto.
