History

Byakko

This shrine was founded in 892 when the monk Sonni of Enryakuji temple on Mount Hiei, finding the lakeside setting of Honkatata reminiscent of Mishima in Izu Province where he had trained, enshrined the deity Oyamatsumi from Mishima Taisha here. Because Honkatata was an imperial estate of Kamigamo Shrine, Tamayorihime was also enshrined, and the combined shrine was called Katata Omiya. The shrine held special privileges on Lake Biwa and prospered until it was destroyed by fire in 1569, after which the Izu Shrine was rebuilt during the Tensho era.
