History
Hieizan Enryakuji was established as the head temple of the Tendai school at the beginning of the Heian period. Saicho, upon returning from China, founded the Konponchudo main hall on this sacred peak to propagate the Tendai teachings he had brought back. For over a thousand years, numerous monks and scholars have trained on this mountain, playing a major role in the development of Japanese Buddhism. Renowned priests such as Honen, Shinran, Eisai, Dogen, and Nichiren all studied here. It truly deserves to be called the mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism, a sacred place of utmost significance.
