History
Shirahige Jinja is the oldest major shrine of Omi, situated on the shores of Lake Biwa. It enshrines Sarutahiko Okami and has long been revered as a deity of longevity and long life. The shrine is most famous for its beautiful torii gate standing in Lake Biwa. Like the Itsukushima Shrine, this gate gracefully stands upon the water and is known as the "Itsukushima of Omi," captivating many visitors. Especially when illuminated by sunrise or sunset, the torii gate appears divine, and many people photograph it. True to its name meaning "white whiskers," this beautiful lakeside sacred site continues to draw worshippers seeking long life, longevity, and guidance in their lives.
