History

Byakko

A relatively new shrine dedicated to Emperor Tenji. Founded in 1940, it is known nationwide as the sacred site of competitive karuta. Every New Year, the Masters Championship and Queen Championship tournaments of competitive karuta are held, drawing many karuta enthusiasts. In its beautiful grounds overlooking Lake Biwa, the spirit of Emperor Tenji's wisdom and learning is preserved.
