Kairyuji is an ancient Soto Zen temple located on a high elevation overlooking the Seto Inland Sea in Higashikubo-cho, Onomichi. True to its name, it enshrines the sea dragon deity and has long been venerated as the guardian of safe navigation and maritime traffic. Onomichi, as a strategic hub for maritime commerce in the Seto Inland Sea since ancient times, was where many sailors and merchants prayed for safe passage at this temple. Today it continues to watch over Onomichi's beautiful sea and townscape, bringing the blessings of the ocean and peace to all who visit.
