History

Byakko

Hotokuji is an ancient temple of the Rinzai Zen sect founded during the Muromachi period, nestled quietly in the mountains of Kiryu as a Zen meditation hall. According to tradition, it was established by Zen master Togen and served as the family temple of the Yura clan during the Sengoku period. In autumn, the temple grounds are adorned with beautiful fall foliage, and the view of the garden's maple leaves from the main hall is particularly enchanting, known as "floor maples." Wrapped in silence, the temple grounds never lack visitors seeking inner peace, and zazen meditation experiences are also offered. Together with Zen teachings, the temple gathers the faith of those seeking spiritual purification and growth.
