History

Byakko

Iigura Kumano Jinja is an ancient shrine founded in 1090 (Kanji 4th year of the Heian period's late stage), with a distinguished lineage enshrined from the Kumano Sanzan in Kishu Province. The enshined deities are the same as those of Kumano Sanzan: Izanagi no Mikoto, Izanami no Mikoto, and Kotowake no O no Mikoto. During the Edo period, it was known as "Iigura no Kumano-sama" and attracted widespread faith from samurai to townspeople, particularly revered as a deity of good relationships and fortune. Today, while located in a prime location in central Tokyo near Tokyo Tower, it remains a precious space where one can calm the heart and offer prayers in a tranquil sacred ground.
