History

Byakko

Tomioka Hachiman-gu has long been cherished as the guardian deity of Fukutawa since ancient Edo. It enshrines Emperor Ojin as its principal deity and is known for the Fukutawa Festival, one of the three great festivals of Edo. It has particularly deep connections to sumo wrestling, and in the Edo period, official tournaments were held within the shrine grounds, with monuments dedicated to successive yokozuna still standing. Gathering the faith of merchants and craftspeople, this is a venerable shrine that has thrived as a source of support for the hearts of Edo people.
