History

Byakko

Shinomura Hachiman Gu in Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, is historically renowned as the site where Ashikaga Takauji raised his banner against the Kamakura shogunate. Under the protection of the Hachiman deity, this decisive action led to the fall of the Kamakura government and the establishment of the Ashikaga (Muromachi) shogunate. Though the former rank is village shrine (sonsha), the historical significance of this site draws visitors interested in Japanese medieval history.
