About
History
This temple is an ancient temple situated on Mt. Kannon, which can be said to be a symbol of Takasaki City. Its founding is said to date back to the Tenpyō era of the Nara period, and it began when the eminent monk Gyōki enshrined the Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva at the imperial wish of Emperor Shōmu. In particular, the enormous white-robed Kannon statue, which is about 21 meters high, overwhelms visitors with its majesty. This Kannon statue was built in the Showa era, praying for the souls of the war dead and world peace. From the temple grounds, a magnificent view of the Kanto Plain spreads out, and one can enjoy the beautiful scenery of each season. Many people visit to cling to the compassion of Kannon and offer their prayers.
