History

Shukuin Ton-gu is a tongu (temporary shrine) and shrine located in Sakai Ward, Sakai City, Osaka. It functions as an outer subsidiary shrine (kegaisha) of Sumiyoshi Taisha, and serves as a temporary resting place for the portable shrine during Sumiyoshi Taisha's annual festival processions. The enshrined deities are the three Sumiyoshi deities — Sokotsutsu-no-Mikoto, Nakatstutsu-no-Mikoto, and Uwatsutsuno-Mikoto — together with Empress Jingu, all known as guardians of safe navigation and patrons of waka poetry. Sakai historically flourished as a major port connecting the capital with overseas trade, and the faith of its merchants and sailors in the Sumiyoshi deities ran deep. The current compound retains its main hall and portable shrine storehouse, preserving traces of its historical significance.
