History

Byakko

Enshrined at the southern end of Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama, this shrine is a subsidiary of Matsuo Taisha. It unites two shrines — Ichitani-sha and Munakata-sha — in a single hall, both counted among the sacred Matsuo Seven Shrines. The three sister goddesses of Munakata are venerated here, offering blessings of women's protection, marital harmony, and safe voyages. Set amid the lush greenery of Arashiyama and the gentle flow of the Katsura River, the shrine has long listened to the prayers of devotees, its divine presence amplified by its riverside setting.
