History

Sanji Chion-ji is a nunnery of the Jodo-shu sect located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, without a mountain name. The principal image is Amida Nyorai. The temple name Sanji (three times) refers to the three daily recitations of nembutsu prayers, expressing gratitude for Amida's compassion across the three periods of past, present, and future. As a distinguished amonsekiryoji (imperial-lineage nunnery), the temple has long maintained ties with the imperial family and court nobility, quietly preserving the flame of the Dharma in Kyoto.
