History

Byakko

One of Kyoto's oldest shrines, with its founding traditionally dated to 701 in the first year of the Taiho era. Revered as the clan deity of the Hata clan, it is particularly known as the deity of sake brewing and receives devoted worship from sake brewers across the nation. Located on the banks of the Katsura River and surrounded by the beautiful nature of Arashiyama, its setting is superb. During the Heian period it was also valued by the imperial court, and today as one of Kyoto's premier shrines, it attracts many pilgrims. As the deity of sake, its blessings for business prosperity are exceptional.
