History

Byakko

Seiganto-ji is the first temple on the Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage route and the commemorative starting point of the Kannon pilgrimage journey. Standing in the spectacular setting overlooking Nachi Falls, it is truly a sacred site where the spiritual power of nature and Kannon's compassion are unified—the very sacred place of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism. The temple was founded in ancient times, born from the union of faith in Nachi Falls and Kannon devotion. From the temple grounds, the magnificent form of Nachi Falls can be viewed, and its roaring waters sound like Kannon's sacred chants. Many pilgrims have begun their long journey through the Saigoku Thirty-Three Temples from this site, seeking Kannon's guidance. Adjacent to Kumano Nachi Taisha, it is a special place where one can feel the deep spiritual connection between Shinto and Buddhist deities.
