It is an ancient temple of the Tendai sect said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, and it is a temple of deep historical significance where Kobo Daishi Kukai also is said to have practiced. Known locally as "Nagao no Kannon-san," it is celebrated in a legend where Shizuka Gozen danced in reverence of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. As a pilgrimage site near the end of the Shikoku pilgrimage, it is a sacred place where many pilgrims offer their heartfelt prayers.
