History
Nagao-ji is the 87th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage and holds an important position as the temple immediately before the concluding temple of Okuboji. It is an ancient temple of the Tendai sect said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, and it is a temple of deep historical significance where Kobo Daishi Kukai also is said to have practiced. Known locally as "Nagao no Kannon-san," it is celebrated in a legend where Shizuka Gozen danced in reverence of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. As a pilgrimage site near the end of the Shikoku pilgrimage, it is a sacred place where many pilgrims offer their heartfelt prayers.
