History

Byakko

The upper Daigoji, enshrined at a sacred height surrounded by deep mountain ranges, is an ancient Shingon sanctuary of profound spiritual significance. Its national treasure five-tiered pagoda, originally constructed in the fifth year of Tenryaku, has stood magnificently for over a thousand years, a testament to timeless beauty and enduring grace. Known as a celebrated cherry blossom viewing site of the great warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it continues to captivate the hearts of pilgrims from ancient nobility to present-day visitors. The crystal waters flowing from mountain depths combined with rigorous Shingon Buddhist practice purify the souls of all pilgrims, illuminating the path toward enlightenment and ultimate awakening.
