History

Byakko

Seishin-in was founded in 1027 when Fujiwara no Michinaga built a hall at the northeast corner of Houjonji temple and installed the poetess Izumi Shikibu (ordained as Senni Houni) as its first abbess. Known familiarly as the "Izumi Shikibu Temple," she entered holy orders here to pray for her daughter Koushikibu no Naishi. The temple later moved near Seiganjii during the Kamakura period, and was relocated to its present site on Shinkyougoku Street by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the Tensho era. A memorial service for Izumi Shikibu is held every March 21st.
