Suika Tenmangu is a shrine in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, founded in 923 (Encho 1) at the command of Emperor Daigo. The monk Sonjou of Enryakuji was ordered to enshrine the spirit of Sugawara Michizane as a guardian against water and fire disasters. Some claim it was the first Tenmangu in Japan. Within the precinct stand the Toten-seki stone said to mark where Michizane ascended to heaven, the Shusse-ishi stone donated by those who achieved success, the Kinryusui spring water believed to heal eye ailments, and the Tamago-ishi stone associated with safe childbirth. Revered as the Suika Tenjin-san by the people of Kyoto, it belongs to the Rakuyo Twenty-Five Tenmangu circuit and continues to receive visitors today.
