Tennoji is the 79th sacred site of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage, located in Sakaide, Kagawa Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kinkazan and it is also known as Kosho-in. The principal object of worship is the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva, and the temple belongs to the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism. The temple name derives from its association with Emperor Sutoku, who was exiled to Sanuki Province. Its devotional poem reflects the transience of human life. Countless Shikoku pilgrims have visited this ancient temple throughout the centuries.
