History
Shojokei-in is the head temple of the Jodo sect, located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto. Temple records state that it was founded by the monk Ennin at the behest of Emperor Seiwa during the Heian period. It holds no mountain name or temple name, and its principal image is a portrait of Honen Shonin. As one of the seven head temples of the Jodo sect, it continues to transmit the teachings of Nembutsu. The temple is the 23rd site on the Twenty-five Sacred Places of Honen Shonin.
