Hozoji Temple

Hozoji is a temple of the Jodo-shu Nishiyama Fukakusa branch, situated quietly in Uradera-cho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto. The mountain name is Muryo-zan and the principal image is Amida Nyorai. The temple is celebrated as the family temple of Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800), the eccentric Edo-period painter renowned for his vivid depictions of birds, animals, and plants. Jakuchu is buried on the temple grounds, and works associated with him have been handed down here. Located near Nishiki Market in the heart of Kyoto, the temple draws artists and art lovers alongside devout worshippers, making it a unique place where faith and art intersect.
