History

Byakko

Formally known as Jisho-ji, this Zen temple was founded by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, and is a beautiful temple of the silver world. In contrast to the Golden Pavilion, it embodies the aesthetics of wabi and sabi. The Kannon Hall, which incorporates the aesthetic sensibilities of Yoshimasa and the essence of Higashiyama culture, presents a simple yet dignified appearance. Together with its dry landscape garden, it represents a pinnacle of Japanese aesthetic consciousness and is a precious cultural heritage. Within the silence, it sharpens the mind and poses the question of what true beauty truly is.
