About
History
This shrine has been enshrined in this area since ancient times as the general guardian of Kōzuke Province (present-day Gunma Prefecture). Its founding is said to date back to the first year of Jingo-Keiun (767) of the Nara period, and as the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of Kōzuke Province, it has gathered the faith of the people. The main hall was rebuilt in the Edo period and exudes a calm dignity. There are many subordinate shrines and sub-shrines within the precincts, and it is still deeply worshipped as an entity deeply rooted in the lives of the local people. As the guardian deity of Kōzuke Province, it is a historic shrine that continues to watch over the peace of the local people.
