History

Byakko

Kokubunji is known as the eightieth temple of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage. It is one of the provincial temples established in each province by imperial edict of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period, serving an important role as the provincial temple of Sanuki. A shrine of high distinction built with prayers for national peace and the happiness of the people. As a sacred site with connections to Kobo Daishi Kukai, it is beloved as a pilgrimage destination visited by many. Throughout long history, it has served as a spiritual support for the people of the region, remaining an esteemed ancient temple.
