History

Byakko

Kōshōji is an ancient Sōtō Zen temple located in Kuchiki Iwase, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. Its honorific mountain name is Kōganzān and its principal object of worship is Shakyamuni Buddha. According to tradition, the monk Dōgen was so struck by the resemblance of this landscape to the original Kōshōji in Uji that he gave the temple the same name. Founded in 1478 (Bunmei 10), it served as the family temple of the Kuchiki clan, lords of the area, and flourished under their patronage. Even today, the pure spirit of Zen pervades this temple in its tranquil mountain setting.
