Takayama Shrine, located in Honmachi, Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, is a rare shrine dedicated to Takayama Hikokuro, a revered loyalist of the late Edo period. Hikokuro was famous for prostrating himself before the Imperial Palace in Kyoto in devotion to the Emperor. The shrine was established by those who admired his spirit of loyalty. It was ranked as a prefectural shrine (kensha) under the Meiji social ranking system. Today it stands as a place of inspiration for those who seek strength of conviction.
