Shimogamo Jinja, formally known as Kamo Mioya Jinja, ranks among Kyoto's oldest shrines, boasting over 2,000 years of history. It enshrines Kamotateitsutino Mikoto and Tamayorihime no Mikoto as its principal deities and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site as a shrine of proper historical lineage. The Tadasu Forest within the shrine grounds preserves the appearance of primordial virgin forest, maintaining a mysterious atmosphere while nestled within the city. The Aoi Festival, celebrated together with Kamigamo Jinja, unfolds like a pageant from the Heian period, conveying the elegant culture of ancient times to the present day. Famous as a deity of good relationships, the prayer for matchmaking at the Aioi Shrine is beloved by many.
