Kannonji is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple known as the sixty-ninth station of the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage. As its name suggests, it enshrines Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva as its principal deity, and has long been a sacred site where people have visited seeking the compassionate blessings of Kannon. Tradition holds that it was founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai, and the teachings of Shingon esoteric Buddhism have been transmitted continuously. This temple, which gave its name to Kannonji City, continues to serve as a spiritual center for the region and as an important pilgrimage station, becoming a source of support for the hearts of many people.
