History

Byakko

Kameoka Shrine stands on the ruins of Hirado Castle's main keep in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Founded in 1438, it was originally called Kameoka Hachimangu and enshrines Takeuchi no Sukune no Mikoto, ancestor of the Matsuura clan who ruled Hirado. During the Edo period it served as the chief tutelary shrine of the domain; in the Meiji era it was designated a prefectural shrine. Its autumn grand festival, the Hirado Kunchi, is still celebrated by the local community today.
