History
Maebashi Hachimangu is an ancient shrine revered as the guardian deity of Maebashi Castle town. According to tradition, it was founded during the Kenkyu era by Adachi Morinaga, a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo. Enshrining Hachiman, the shrine has long been the object of faith among warriors and merchants for its spiritual benefits of martial prowess and prosperous commerce. During the Edo period, it received the devoted patronage of the Sakai clan, lords of Maebashi Domain, and flourished alongside the development of the castle town. Since the Meiji Restoration, it has remained a cherished spiritual support for Maebashi citizens, particularly known for benefits of warding off misfortune, household safety, and prosperous commerce. Each autumn, the grand festival features a spirited portable shrine procession, beloved as a hallmark of Maebashi's fall season.
