History

Byakko

This ancient shrine of Matsuo Taisha stands 400 meters south of the main hall in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto. Listed as a Myojin-Taisha in the Engishiki, it was established in the Yamashiro province following a divine oracle in the reign of Emperor Kenko. Relocated to its current site in 856, it received the divine rank of Junior Second Rank in 859. The sacred Tsuki-no-be stone (Moon-extending stone) on the grounds is revered for safe childbirth, with legend holding that Empress Jingu used it before delivering Emperor Ojin. The grounds are designated a historic site by Kyoto City.
