History

Byakko

Myoman-ji is the head temple of the Kenpon Hokke sect, founded by the monk Nichiju who built a Lotus Sutra hall in the Rokujo district of Kyoto in 1383, formally establishing Myoman-ji in 1389. Through turbulent centuries — including the Tenbun Hokke Disturbance of 1536 and multiple devastating fires — the temple was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. In 1968 it relocated to its present serene site in Iwakura, northern Kyoto. The temple is famed for its Snow Garden, designed by the haiku master Matsunaga Teitoku, and houses a historic bell connected to the legend of Anchin and Kiyohime. The grounds also feature a stupa modeled on the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, India.
