Kamigamo Jinja is one of Kyoto's oldest shrines, formally known as Kamowake Ikazuchi Jinja. It enshrines Kamowake Ikazuchi Okami, the thunder deity, and has received profound patronage from the imperial court since ancient times, standing as a shrine of distinguished status. The shrine grounds are filled with natural power—from the Myojin River flowing through the compound to centuries-old sacred trees. The Aoi Festival, celebrated continuously since the Heian period, is an elegant annual celebration that captivates the spirit. As Kyoto's guardian deity, this shrine continues to be beloved by many people.
