History
Akashiji is the forty-third temple on the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage, visited by many pilgrims. This place has long flourished as a sacred site of ascetic practice and developed as a center of mountain worship. There is a tradition that Kobo Daishi Kukai practiced asceticism here, and the serene environment surrounded by deep mountains is said to have the power to purify the heart and cleanse the soul. From its location in the mountainous Uwa region, it continues to gather deep faith as a place of practice united with nature.
