History
Isaniwa Jinja is an ancient shrine dedicated to Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingo, and Emperor Chuai, and is renowned as a distinguished shrine featuring a rare eight-legged architectural style (Hachiman-zukuri) found throughout Japan. Located northeast of Dogo Hot Spring, it is cherished as an iconic symbol of Matsuyama. The vermillion-painted main sanctuary beyond the 135 stone steps is truly awe-inspiring. As a Hachiman shrine, it is believed to bestow blessings of military success and fortune in competition, and has been deeply revered by warriors and merchants since ancient times. Together with Dogo Hot Spring, it is famous as a celebrated sight for Matsuyama tourism, with many visitors climbing the stone steps to pray for the fulfillment of their wishes. During the autumn grand festival, the spectacular sight of sacred palanquins ascending the stone steps is witnessed.
