History
Kaiten Shrine in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, enshrines patriots—primarily samurai of the Mito Domain—who gave their lives for their country during the tumultuous late Edo period, including the Ansei Purge, the Sakuradamon Incident, the Tengutō Rebellion, and the Aizu War. The shrine's name is derived from Fujita Tōko's work Kaiten Shishi, meaning 'Poems on Turning the Tide of Heaven.' The souls of those who sacrificed themselves to transform the nation rest quietly here to this day.
